Measuring emissions from ships to ensure compliance with environmental regulations
Emissions monitoring in the maritime industry
Ships contribute significantly to global air pollution. We help monitor their compliance with environmental regulations.
As pioneers in the field of maritime emissions monitoring, Explicit enables authorities to monitor compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regulations using airborne surveillance of individual ship emissions. The solution allows for effective enforcement of key environmental regulations at sea.

How we monitor maritime emissions
Explicit’s Mini Sniffer System can be used on both manned an unmanned aircraft and in multiple locations to conduct airborne surveillance of maritime emissions.
What we monitor
Sulphur
Based on the SO2/CO2 ratio in the exhaust gas, the system can determine the sulphur content (% m/m) in the fuel being burned using emission factors prescribed by Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).
- ECA limit: 0.10 % FSC
- Global cap: 0.50 % FSC

NOx emissions
- Estimated average NOx in g/kWh
- Tier III NTE threshold compliance
- Tier I-II outlier identification

Methane slip
- CH4 concentration mapping (ppb)
- Stand-alone sensor package

Reporting

Researching methane emissions from ships in the FUMES project
In the Fugitive and Unburned Methane Emissions from Ships (FUMES) project, Explicit collaborates with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), to collect the most comprehensive dataset of real-world methane emissions from LNG-fueled ships to date.
